The diorama represents a historical Arthur and two of his standard bearers standing amid heaps of dead Saxons. Whatever the reality of Arthur, the one true "Arthurian" fact is that in the late 5th or early 6th Century, the wave of Saxon expansion was halted, and perhaps reversed, for a period of about 50 years. Correctly or not, Arthur came to be credited with this feat.
